Refrigeration Monitoring

We are often asked how refrigeration efficiency can be measured. A good refrigeration engineer can give an indication based on a visual inspection. For a more detailed evaluation we use the Climacheck performance analyser, a portable unit which allows us to not only measure the efficiency of a refrigeration system but also to detect wear or problems with any of the component parts.

On one particular site we undertook monitoring prior to commencing modifications to improve energy efficiency. Although the chiller had recently been serviced faults were found that would, in a short period of time have caused the catastrophic failure of 2 compressors, the replacement costs for which would have run into tens of thousands of pounds.

A permanently installed, web based system is also available. This allows continual access to refrigeration efficiency along with all operating parameters, which allows early diagnosis of issues which may affect refrigeration efficiency. (Click Here 2 Sisters Food Group Case Study)

I have employed Excalibur to improve the energy efficiency of 8 Dunham Bush and Hitachi process chillers on two newspaper print sites, both systems showed a reduction in power consumption in excess of 35%. The work was carefully planned and shut-down periods were kept to a minimum.

Following the modifications, the system now operates more efficiently at much lower head pressure.
